What I'm Working On

The Plains of Vast Indifference

Beginning in 1999, The Plains of Vast Indifference chronicles two decades of second- and third-chance lovers who grow up amid the despair and toxic masculinity of a dead-end Heartland small town.

In rusted-out Rennick, Iowa, a town that only cares about sports and seed prices, the unfashionable nerd abandoned by her mother and left unable to trust anyone was never going to be the most popular girl at school. Alone and unseen all her life, Allison Atlas has vowed to do whatever it takes to leave a place she’s more likely to encounter muskrats than mallrats. But after feeling a little of that human touch from Mark, the neighbor boy she used to play tag with before he became too cool for her, Allison discovers there may be something there that wasn't there before.
Nicknamed The Beast, star linebacker Mark Frost can’t wait to escape the endless cornfields of his hometown and his emotionally-dead father. But when a concussion cancels his ticket out with a football scholarship, only Allison is there to pick up the tatters of his dreams. While constantly teasing her in his backyard about her love prospects as they play “guess the train” passing on the horizon the way they used to as kids, Mark scrambles for a new game plan to get unstuck from Iowa. But then he sees she’s never looked at him that way before.

She hates football, he doesn’t understand her paintings, and they ghost each other at school because their social statuses are as far apart as their SAT scores. But, come graduation, the boy who can't leave and the girl who’s dying to will each have to decide whether to hold onto the slender threads that tie their lives together. What they choose will determine everything about the next twenty years of their lives on the plains.
